You want to feel comfortable in your house, you want to be connected with your neighbors, and you want to have plenty of things to do.

Though a recent survey found that the #1 amenity for retirees wasn’t an enormous pool or access to wonderful restaurants—it was being close to their grandkids!

Whether they live in the area, or are coming to visit from out of town, you want to be able to spend quality time with your grandchildren. Fortunately, there are a ton of kid-friendly amenities in the Raleigh area that are perfect for making memories with your family.

Raleigh Area Attractions

Downtown, you’ll find the NC Museum of Natural Sciences. This museum is the largest natural history museum in the Southeast. Which means you know your grandkids will have a ton to discover. And right next door, is the North Carolina Museum of History.

When the weather is nice, take the grandkids out to Pullen Park in downtown Raleigh. This huge park is home to the 5th oldest operating amusement park in the world. Take a spin on the carousel or enjoy the scenery aboard the Pullen Park miniature train.

Things to Do in Clayton

During the summer, the town of Clayton hosts free movie nights and free concerts in the park. The movie nights are held towards the end of summer when it’s still warm out side, but it’s starting to get dark earlier. Families will come out to the Town Square with blankets and folding chairs, and watch the selected movie on a huge screen. And while everyone’s waiting for the movie to start, you can keep the kiddos entertained with face painting, games, food trucks and more.

The summer concert series is also a great way to spend some time with the family. Will a wide selection of food trucks, a bouncy house, various vendors, and more, you’ll be able to make memories with you family as you share an evening of good food and great live music.

Take a Day Trip

The North Carolina Zoo is one of the best zoos in the country. Take the kids to see exotic animals in sprawling habitats. The Zoo is less than a two hour drive from Clayton which makes it the perfect spot for an excursion. Two hours in the other direction, and you’ll be at the beach which makes for a fun-filled day of sun and sand with the kids.
