Retirement is an exciting time for so many reasons! Instead of waking up early and heading to work every day, you can wake up whenever you want and fill your days any way you choose.
However, for many new retirees, the transition can be challenging. All at once, there’s no set destination for you to be everyday. Similarly, not having a “job” or work to do can take some getting used to.
That’s why so many retirees in Johnston County choose to spend some of their free time giving back to the community! There are so many awesome organizations throughout the county, and some truly worthwhile volunteer opportunities.
Here are four fantastic volunteer opportunities to consider:
American Red Cross
Perhaps one of the most famous organizations on this list, the American Red Cross provides relief to victims of disaster and helps people prevent and respond to emergencies.
The American Red Cross of Eastern North Carolina is currently seeking a variety of different volunteers, ranging from blood donor ambassadors to Financial Support volunteers. If you’ve been thinking about giving back to your community, this is a great place to start.
Smithfield Rescue Mission
Open 365 days a year, the Smithfield Rescue Mission aims to help people break the cycle of homelessness and poverty throughout Johnston County. They offer a variety of different services, from food support to employment resources.
They seek volunteers throughout the year, but especially during the holiday season! Volunteer work includes office tasks like greeting visitors and answering phones, leading classes and workshops for life and professional skills, and providing transportation for residents.
Partnership for Children
The Johnston County Partnership for Children helps improve the safety, health and emotional wellbeing of children.
One in four kids in Johnston County live in poverty. The Partnership for Children aims to provide young children with resources, support, and educational opportunities to help get them ready for school and equipped with the emotional support they need to become lifelong learners.
Volunteer opportunities include being an advocate for children. Specific job responsibilities include graphic design, answering phones, data entry, event volunteering, car seat clinics, and more.
Clayton Area Ministries
Clayton Area Ministries provides food, support, and resources to Clayton residents in need. As a food pantry, they are constantly seeking volunteers to assist in packaging up food, helping clients with food selections, and unpacking large donations.
